THE WEATHER
PASSING SHOWERS AND COOLER TEMPERATURES. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, September 9. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland:— Moderate to strong south-west to westerly winds, backing later again to north-west; gale force probable at times in exposed positions. Weather changeable, and with passing showers. Temperatures rather cooler. Seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather fair to fine at first in districts with an easterly aspect, elsewhere cloudy to overcast, with rain at times and showers extending later to eastern parts also. Temperatures mild, but becoming somewhat cooler to-morrow, especially in the South Island. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone has been passing eastwards of the North Island and a depression is approaching the Dominion from the Tasman Sea. Winds.—Moderate to strong northerly, rising at times to gale force in places south of New Plymouth and Castle Point, backing to westerly and later to south-westerly in places. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, elsewhere moderate, but rising north of Cape Egmont; eastern Tasman Sea, moderate to strong winds between north and west, shortly backing temporarily to south-west, seas rather rough to rough. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine but windy until the middle of the afternoon, when light rain fell for an hour or two. At one o’clock this morning the weather was fine, but there was a cold wind from the east. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows: — This morning (rising) 29.40 in. Yesterday 29.68 in. Tuesday 29.85 in.
