Samoan News. —News from Samoa, via Fiji, states that as soon as the German warships left Apia Harbour, war between King Malietoa and the rebel chief Tamareu broke out afresh. It was also reported that one of the American warship Mohican’s crew was clubbed to death by a native for an insult offered to his wife. Catholic Literary Society.—At a meeting of the Catholic Literary Society last evening, a discussion took place on the question, “Is tc’. _cco smoking beneficial or injurious?” After an animated discussion it was decided by 16 votes to 13 that the practice is beneficial. Big Bay Rush. —The Minister of Mines expects that fully 170 prospectors will proceed in the Hinemoa to Big Bay. Mr Gordon, inspector of mines, comes south in order to see that no men are taken aboard who are not fully equipped for from four to six months. Mr Murray, a surveyor from Auckland, will accompany the prospectors to survey tracks in the bush.
Borough Council.—At the meeting of the Invercargill Borough Council last evening the Mayor submitted a return of the attendances of various councillors during the past year. There had been 52 meetings of the council, and the attendances had been: The Mayor, 52; Cr Blacke, 49; Cr Little, 48; Cr Tapper, 48; Cr Hannah, 45 ; Cr Lewis, 40; Cr Roche, 39; Cr Basstian, 36; Cr Fleming, 27; Cr Cleave, 26; Cr Taylor, 25.
