TERM OF REFORMATIVEDETENTION
CENTRAL FIGURE IN SWEEPSTAKE EPISODE. (United Press Association.) Dunedin, September 9. Declaring that accused seemed to have an ambition to go to gaol the Probation Officer declared in the Magistrate’s Court that Ernest Arthur Tremere Johnstone, who was the central figure in the £30,000 sweepstake episode, was not amenable to control or advice. He had not responded to terms of probation recently extended. Johnstone faced several charges on one of which, fraudulently attempting to obtain £2O by a valueless cheque, he was sentenced to 12 months reformative treatment. The police stated that when on probation on charges of obtaining credit by fraud a position was found for accused with a Milton farmer named Pirie. Accused remained for a week and then stole a cheque form, came to Dunedin, went into a cake shop and attempted to cash the cheque, which was filled in and signed “Pirie.” When refused, he dropped the cheque on the floor, subsequently admitting the present offence. The Magistrate said that acucsed had taken the course which the Court feared he would when admitted to probation, and the only thing for him was a period of control. , IN— ■ ——'
