THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Invercargill Horticultural Society was held in the Tudor tea rooms last evening, Mr J. L. Lennie presided over a good attendance of members. The chairman reported that during the year the membership had greatly increased and that the financial position had improved. The society was in a healthy state. Four shows were held during the year. All were well patronized and the exhibits were of improved quality. In the coming year members could look forward to an outstanding event in the history of the society. That was the South Island show of the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand, to be held in Invercargill on October 1 and 2. The election of office bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. L. Lennie (re-elected for the 22nd consecutive year), vice-presidents, Mrs I. Craig and Messrs J. Bayne, W. Stapleton, and N. Carter; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr G. M. Broughton; auditor, Mr W. P. Wicks; committee, Mesdames Blomfield, Drummond, Lennie, and Curson, Miss Craig, Messrs Meadows, Stewart, Railton, F. D. Aitken, J. Orr, W. Crighton and E. Campbell. Mr F. J. Girvan, on behalf of the Riverton Centenary Committee, who attended the meeting by invitation, gave the members some interesting information about the monster flower show to be held on January 12 and 13, 1937, as part of the centenary celebrations. Mr G. J. Jaquiery delivered an interesting address on “The Geology of the Garden.”
