NEW ZEALAND’S NAMES
“One of the bones the Maori has to pick with the pakeha is the atrocious nomenclature with which we have disfigured these islands,” said the Rev. Dr J. J. North when speaking to members of the Auckland Rotary Club at a luncheon. He said such names as Young Nick’s Head, Cape Foulwind, and Poverty Bay showed that the white men had certainly not kept to the Maori level of musical vision used in naming places.
