SOUTHLAND POWER SCHEME
MEETING OF RATEPAYERS AT OTAUTAU. Mr R. P. Meek addressed a meeting of ratepayers at Otautau on the proposal of the Government to take over the Monowai scheme. Dr W. B. Reekie presided. Mr Meek said that 100 per cent, support had been received for the proposal from practically all over Southland where the districts had been thoroughly canvassed. He considered that the Power Board was only sparring for time and urged upon ratepayers the necessity for signing the petition, which was practically a referendum. Nationalization was inevitable, and ratepayers should realize the seriousness of the position and get rid of the risk attendant upon the retention of the scheme. By the sale to the Government costs would be eliminated and there was every possibility of procuring cheaper electricity. It was not a political question, but a purely business proposition, which would eventually be a benefit to Southland. Mr Meek stated that as the members of the committee had given their time gratuitously, they were entitled to out of pocket expenses. He asked that ratepayers assist financially to the best of their ability. A vote of thanks to the speaker was carried by acclamation.
