Queenstown EUCHRE TOURNAMENT

The fortnightly euchre tournament and dance was held in St. Joseph’s schoolroom. The attendance was a record one. Mrs H. Braden and Miss Molly Downey tied for first place for the women’s prize, Miss Downey winning the play off. The men’s prize was won by Mr John Walsh and the consolation prizes by Mrs L. Collings and Mr G. Lynch. The music for the dance was supplied by Misses R. Powell and R. McSoriley (piano), assisted by Mr A. Wheeler (cornet) and Mr J. Lynch (effects). The hostesses were Misses M. Lynch, R. Powell and Eileen Lynch. MINING Owing to the mild winter, most of the sluicing claims have continued working. There has been plenty of water and few frosts have been felt. Several claims on the Shotover River are now producing more than ordindry returns. One claim which was previously worked unsuccessfully, has been operated by men with local knowledge, and a small team has obtained about 500 oz. during the past few months.
