When the Queen Mary docked in South* ampton on her first return voyage from New York she left the transatlantic reeqid still unbroken. This is in accordance her owners’ policy. The Cunard Company s healthy—and in these days unusual —inditference to blue ribands is not however, likely to be a permanent state of mind. To say that the Queen Mary can break the record, when she likes is to leave the Nortn Atlantic out of the picture; but to say that the Queen Mary can break the record when the weather is good is probably true. It was only a 10-hour belt ot fog off the Newfoundland Banks that enabled her. on the outward voyage, to conform by a margin of 40 minutes .to the modesty of her owners’ ambitions. Accommodation on the Queen Mary more than lives up to expectations. The discreet luxury of the first-class cabins, the unobtrusively palatial public rooms, are all that the most sybaritic passenger could desire. Her very vastness has, it is true, its drawbacks, and the gregariously minded may prefer to travel in ships where a more intimate and sociable atmosphere is attainable during the short voyage. , These considerations do not apply to the third and tourist classes. The former—right up in the bows, and the quietest part of the ship —is a more companionable place than the first class, according to a writer in The Times. The deck space is very small, and a typical two-berth cabin is not much larger than a first-class sleeper on an English train. But the public rooms, partly because they are less spacous and partly because the decorations are gay but simple, have a friendlier atmosphere than the first class. Here one feels that one is on board ship, a circumstance which is not obtruded upon the attention in the costlier quarters OTIIER PORTS COASTAL AND" OVERSEAS (United Press Association.)
