SOUTHLAND FORECAST.

(Special to The Times.)

Wellington, July 22.

Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: —

Winds light to moderate and variable at first, with westerlies predominating and later changing again to southerlies and freshening. Weather fine at first, but some showers, and, possibly, hail probable, with a southerly change. Temperatures cold. Seas moderate to rather rough. Following is the Dominion forecast. Weather cloudy to overcast between Banks Peninsula and East Cape, with rain in places, but gradually improving ; elsewhere fair, but scattered showers developing later, mote especially in the coastal areas of the South Island. Temperatures cold.

General Situation—There has been little change in the pressure distribution over the New Zealand area, but a shallow depression, followed by a sharp rise in pressure, is advancing acioss the Tasman Sea. Winds—Southerly north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, still strong and squally between Cook Strait and East Cape, but decreasing and otherwise moderate, veering temporarily in places to westerly; elsewhere moderate southwesterly to westerly, backing again soon to southerlies and freshening somewhat. Seas—New Zealand waters, rough to high between Kaikoura and East Cape, but moderating to-morrow, elsewhere rather rough to rough; eastern Tasman Sea, moderate and variable winds at first, but southerlies soon prevailing and freshening somewhat, seas moderate to rather rough.
