ELECTRIC POWER SCHEME
Government Asked To Take Over TEXT OF PETITION The committee appointed at Tuesday’s meeting of ratepayers to draw up and circulate a petition asking the Government to take over the assets of the Southland Electric Power Board has wasted no time in fulfilling its first duty. In consultation with its solicitoi (Mr W. G. Tait) yesterday morning it decided on the text of the petition which was yesterday afternoon placed in the printer’s hands and which will be circulated this week or early next week. The petition is worded as follows:—
To the Honourable the Speaker and members of the House of Representatives of the Dominion of New Zealand in Parliament assembled: The humble petition of the undersigned ratepayers of the Southland Electric Power Board district in the Dominion of New Zealand sheweth: — 1. That on or about the 16th day of March, 1936, the Honourable the Minister of Finance made an offer to the Southland Electric Power Board to take over on behalf of his Majesty s Government in New Zealand the assets and liabilities of the Southland Electric Power Board. 2. That on the 17th day of March, 1936, by resolution the Southland Electric Power Board decided to take a referendum of the ratepayers of the district to determine whether the said ratepayers approved of the undertaking being handed over to his Majesty’s Government. 3. That the taking of such a referendum had the approval of the Honourable the Minister of Finance. 4 That on the 18th day of June, 1936, the Southland Electric Power Board decided by a vote of seven for and five against that the resolution to take a poll or referendum of the ratepayers (referred to in Paragraph 2 hereof) be rescinded.
5. That your petitioners are convinced that the majority of the ratepavers and other inhabitants of the district desire that the undertaking of the Southland Electric Power Board should be taken over and administeied by the New Zealand Gov-
ernment. Your petitioners humbly pray: That his Majesty's Government take such steps as may be necessary to take over the whole of the undertaking of the Southland Electric Power Board.
