ADMINISTRATION OF SAMOA
DEFINITION OF POLICY REQUESTED.
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, July 22.
A request that the Government should define its attitude to the Administration of Western Samoa was made by the Leader of the Opposition (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) in an urgent question addressed to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Forbes referred to a special Press cablegram from Samoa, in which the Minister of Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone), the leader of the Government Goodwill Mission to the mandated territory, was reported as having said: “We don’t want Samoa, we don’t want your bananas and we don't want the Maui Pomare.” He asked whether that statement was made with the authority of Cabinet. The Prime Minister replied that Mr Langstone had correctly stated the Government’s policy when he said: “Our sole desire is to act as big brothers, and to do everything possible in the interest of the Samoans.”
