LAWN TENNIS

Australia To Meet Britain GERMANY DEFEATED (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, July 21. Australia defeated Germany in the inter-zone final of the Davis Cup contest, and will now meet Britain in the challenge round, which begins on Saturday. By defeating H. Henke! (Germany) V. B. McGrath won the necessary third match for Australia. G. von Cramm (Germany) withdrew from the remaining singles match, in which J. H. Crawford (Australia) defeated H. Denker (Germany). Australia thus won by 4 matches to 1.

McGrath began nervously . against Henkel and was trailing love—3. Then he found accurate touch and captured six games in a row for the set. Overdriving and netting by McGrath enabled the German to lead 5—3 in the second set. The Australian then won two games by forcing tactics, but Henkel won the set on McGrath’s errors in the next two games. The third set was not inspiring, but McGrath, serving better than nitherto, held his service in the 10th game to love for the set. The Australian placed his shots cleverly and smashed severely in the fourth set to run to a 4—love

lead. The third game saw a great battle, McGrath winning after 11 deuces. Henkel row fighting for his life, put in s’ .if t services and clever placements to even the games, 4—all. He was unable to continue the pressure, however, and lost his service in the ninth game through McGrath’s excellent returns. McGrath, serving strongly, dominated the court in the next game, which he won to love and put Australia into the challenge round.

McGrath used his winning openings more effectively than Henkel. He also bad Henkel guessing with variations of pace and length and his occasional cleverly-disguised direction shots. Denker deputized for von Cramm, who did not play owing to an injury. This was practically an exhibition match. Crawford played delightful tennis and he had Denker continually guessing. The German was not able to extend the Australian, who maintained an easy display and continued untroubled to the end.

V. B. McGrath defeated H. Henkel, 6—3, 5—7, 6—4, 6—4. J. H. Crawford defeated H. Denker, 6—3, 6—l, 6—4. The Australian manager, C. S. Sproule, stated that A. K. Quist was much better and would be fit to play against England.

“We sympathize with the German team, which had its own troubles,” he said. “Henkel to-day was not quite fit; nevertheless, McGrath played splendidly.” Von Cramm said, “The Australians are certainly a wonderful team, to lose their champion, have a reserve ready i and be able to win two vital matches, j They have our congratulations.” ’ MEN’S HOCKEY TOWN TEAMS ANNOUNCED.
