WALLIS SHIELD FINAL MATAURA DEFEATS WYNDHAM In the final of the Eastern Southland Rugby Football Sub-Union’s Wallis Shield competition, Mataura, the leading Eastern team in the Town competition, defeated Wyndham, winner of the Eastern Wednesday competition, by 24 points to 12. The match was played at Wyndham and attracted a good attendance. In the early stages of the g:.me it was apparent that Mataura had the advantage in quickness on attack and penetration, but nevertheless the home team had the advantage during the greater part of the first half, but the attack lacked finish. In the second half Mataura began to score freely and the scores were 24 points to 3 ten minutes before the final whistle. Wyndham, however, rallied well and added a further nine points before the game ended. The teams were:—
Mataura (maroon). —Heaps; H. McConnell, Adams, Maudsley; McCaughan, J. Leitch; C. McConnell; forwards, Clark, Renshaw, Curtin, McGowan, Coster, Amos, Dixon.
Wyndham (blue and black). —S. McKay; McKelvie, F. Crosbie, D. McCaughan; McLennan; forwards, W. Smith, Lines, O. McKay, R. McKay, J. McKenzie, J. Crosbie, Kennedy, Cooper. Wyndham won the toss and had the advantage of the sun at its back in the first spell. Leitch kicked off and play was held up almost immediately by a penalty kick awarded to Mataura, but McGowan’s kick was just outside the upright and Wyndham forced. Mataura returned to the attack and McGowan broke away, but a forward pass when he was in a handy position spoiled the movement. Mataura hooked from the scrum, but Maudsley was forced out at the corner. McKelvie punted to put Wyndham on attack and a melee near Mataura’s goal-mouth followed. Johnston took two penalty kicks from outside the twenty-five, but neither was successful. Play remained in Mataura territory for a while, but a series of passing rushes gradually brought play back to neutral ground. Leitch received the ball following a line-out and broke through to set the backs in action, but McConnell was brought down. S. McKay found the line well in stopping a Mataura rush and the Blue forwards pressed through in a dribbling rush to Mataura’s twenty-five. A further good kick by the Wyndham full-back put the ball out in the corner at Mataura’s goal. Wyndham pressed strongly and a scrum on the goal line followed, but Mataura forced down. D. McCaughan showed a burst of speed and found the line well. Leitch punted and the ball rebounded, but a Mataura speculator was too strong and Wyndham forced. A strong Wyndham attack a moment later had a similar result. Mataura returned to the attack and the scoring was opened after Maudsley had received the ball from McGowan and ran through cleverly from the twenty-five line to outdistance the opposition and score between the posts. McGowan converted. Mataura 5, Wyndham 0. The Wyndham backs returned to the attack and pressed strongly, but the ball seldom reached the wings. Mataura slowly retrieved the position and a further good passing movement resulted in Maudsley scoring again. McGowan’s kick failed. Mataura 8, Wyndham 0. After an exchange of kicks at the start of the second half, Wyndham was awarded a penalty kick in a handy position and Johnston opened Wyndham’s score with a goal. Mataura 8, Wyndham 3. Mataura hooked from a ruck and McConnell sent his backs away, but a forward pass by Maudsley caused play to be held up. A further ruck occurred on the line and C. McConnell forced his way across. McGowan’s kick failed. A moment later, Mataura scored again when H. McConnell dived over from a scrum near the line. McGowan’s kick did not rise. Mataura 14, Wyndham 3. Maudsley put m a good run along the sideline, but was brought down. A set scrum was hooked by Mataura and C. McConnell dived over for a further try which was not converted. Wyndham assailed Mataura’s twenty-five for a few minutes, but Mataura cleared and took up the attack, Maudsley going over again in the corner for an unconverted try. Mataura 20, Wyndham 3. Wyndham was awarded a penalty kick outside the twenty-five, but Johnston’s kick did not rise. The Blues kept up the attack, but Mataura cleared after a series of line-outs. Wyndham had to force down twice, but a further Mataura attack was successful when H. McConnell kicked a field goal. Mataura 24, Wyndham 3. Wyndham made desperate attempts to score and a dribbling rush looked promising, but possession was lost and the ball went over the dead ball line. Mataura was penalized in the twentyfive and Johnston kicked a goal. A further attack was also successful. H. McConnell fumbled the ball on the line and H. Leitch, who had replaced McKenzie when the latter was injured shortly before, scored in a handy position. Johnston’s kick failed. A moment later McKelvie kicked a goal and the game ended with the scores: Mataura 24, Wyndham 12. Mr R. Marshall was the referee. HIGH SCHOOLS’ MATCH. SOUTH OTAGO DEFEATS GORE.
