FORTUNE FOR SERVANT

MAID RECEIVES £26,000. A fortune of £26,000 has been left to a maid by her mistress. The bequest is one of the biggest of its kind ever made. The fortune was left to Miss Mary Jackson, whose mistress, Miss Marion Brown, of Lanark, died on March 7 last, aged 84, leaving £35,229. Miss Brown’s bequests were as follows: —£26,000 and a house, The Heritage, High Street, Lanark, to Miss Jackson; £2OOO to Miss Jackson’s sister, Elizabeth, who was formerly employed by Miss Brown; £lOOO to relatives and friends.

Member of a noted Lanark family, her father being provost for 15 years, Miss Brown was a familiar figure in the town. She refused to own a car, driving her own pony and trap. Apart from distant relatives, she was alone in the world.
