Reference to the effects that the imposition of a 40-hour week would have on the working of electric power stations was made by the engineer of the Southland Electric Power Board (Mr L. B. Hutton) to the meeting of the board yesterday. “There are not enough men in New Zealand to manage the Dominion’s power stations on a 40hour week,” he said. The effect on faultsmen and other employees would be too drastic to make the proposal practicable, he said. Advice has been received that the Rangatira failed to connect with the south-bound express yesterday morning. The North Island mails will therefore not reach Invercargill until 5 o’clock this morning, the postal officials having arranged for them to come down by a goods train.
