Mr A. Derbic returned to Invercargill by the express last evening. Messrs S. L. Maxwell (Auckland). F. Bzar (Wellington) and C. Jarvis (Dunedin) are guests at the Club Hotel. Dr. and Mrs Alan Tennent, formerly of Invercargill, left Wellington on Monday for Auckland, en route to Honolulu.

The Anglican Bishop of Dunedin (the Rt. Rev. W. A. R. Fitchett) arrived in Gore yesterday by the mid-day express and returned north later, after discussing administrative questions with the vicar and wardens of Holy Trinity Church.

Mr A. W. de Berry, a graduate in dental surgery of the University of Otago, has been awarded the NorthWestern University Dental School Scholarship, and will leave on August 4 for the United States to take up the scholarship at Chicago on September 1.

Messrs A. Prestwick (Lake Manapouri), J. Thomson "Dunedin), L. Anderson (Dunedin), D. H. Merry weather (Auckland), C. Mueller (Adelaide). N. Daley (Wellington) and G. Woodford (Sydney) are guests at the Grand Hotel.

Mr H. F. O’Leary. K.C.. has been nominated by the New Zealand Law Society for appointment to the rules committee which is constituted under the Judicature Act. The society nominates three members, whose nominations must be approved by the Chief Justice.

Dr. F. G. Soper, who has been appointed professor of chemistry in the University of Otago, arrived at Wellington by the Akaroa from London on Friday. Dr. Soper was formerly lecturer in charge of physical chemistry at the University College of North Wales, Bangor. Sir Carrick Robertson, president of the council of the Auckland Institute and Museum, Sir Cecil Leys, and Professor H. W. Segar have been appointed the council’s delegates to the annual meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, to be held at Auckland next year.

Reference to the death of Mr Peter Donnelly, who had been in the employ of the Southland Electric Power Board for many years, was made by the chairman (Mr J. T. Carswell) at the meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Carswell, in moving tha. a letter of condolence should be sent to the widow, said that Mr Donnelly had been a very conscientious and valuable officer. The motion was carried in the usual manner.
