Pukerau
LECTURE BY MISSIONARY A missionary lecture, illustrated with lantern slides, was delivered in the Presbyterian Church at PuKerau by Sister Jessie, of the Maori Mission Fields. There was a very large attendance present. The Rev. Mr Nixon, who presided, briefly introduced the speaker, who dealt interestingly with the lives and customs of the natives, and outlined the progress being made in their work and Gospel teachings. At the close of the address a collection was taken up and realized a helpful sum.
During the evening a recitation was given by Marjorie Gordon and a solo by Mr S. B. Edwards. The accompaniments were played by Mrs J. A. Edwards. The monthly meeting of the Kaiwera Women’s Institute took place in the Kaiwera Hall, when Mrs T. Herron presided over a good attendance of members, and a party of visitors from the Pukerau Institute. Opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs Quertier, who is shortly leaving the district to reside in Gore.
Mrs Herron, in presenting her with a fountain pen and Eversharp pencil, stated that Mrs Quertier had been a valued member of the Institute since it was formed seven years ago, and her helpful advice and assistance would be greatly missed. On behalf of the gathering she extended their best wishes for her future welfare and happiness. Mrs Kennedy, president of the Pukerau Women’s Institute, also spoke. Mrs Quertier gratefully acknowledged the gifts and expressions of goodwill. Items were contributed by the following: Pianoforte duet, Misses Elliott; solos, Mhsdames P. Davidson and A. Murdock; duet, Mesdames T. Herron and P. Davidson; recitations, Mrs D. Robertson and Miss Hampton. Competitions were won by Mrs G. Gordon and Mrs A. McCale.
