LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
Deceased Member Honoured (United Piess Association.) Wellington, July 21. The Legislative Council ipet at 2.30 p.m. Four days’ leave of absence was granted to the Hon. Sir Charles Statham on the ground of illness. Tributes were paid to the memory of Sir William Hall-Jones, who had been a member of the Council since 1913. The Leader of the Council (the Hon. M. Fagan) moved a resolution expressing appreciation of the deceased member’s services and expressing sympathy with his widow. Mr Fagan said that Sir Williams death had severed the last link with the Seddon Government. That Government, with which Sir William had been associated, was responsible for much humanitarian legislation and would not easily be forgotten. In those days Sir William would have been classed as a Labour Radical. He had had a long and distinguished public life. The Hon. D. Buddo (Christchurch) seconded the motion. Mr Buddo said that a valuable lite had been lost. The Hon. T. Brindle (Wellington) said that Sir William’s name would be indelible in New Zealand history. The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (Buller) paid a tribute to the part Sir William had played as Minister of Public Works in the development of the country. He had a modern brain and was radical till he died. The Hon. J. Trevethick (Auckland) said that Sir William had remained steadfast to the principles of the early days, and as late as the opening of the present session of Parliament had said that the spirit of Liberalism would never die. The Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes (Christchurch) said that Richard Seddon had said that Sir William was the greatest administrator in his Cabinet. The Hon, T. O’Byrne (Invercargill) said that although Sir William was advanced in years, he always had a progressive mind and had supported the present Ministry. The motion was carried and the Council adjourned at 3.15 p.m. till Tuesday as a mark of respect to Sir William’s memory.
