Palmerston North, July 21. Following are the acceptances for the Manawatu ’ Racing Club's Winter meeting on Saturday:— 11.30 a.m.

WHIPPET NOTES (By “Oteramika.”) Owing to adverse weather there vias no fast work done on the tracks during the weekend. The Invercargill Club held a successful meeting last Saturday and although the fields were not strong numerically the racing was of a high standard. Lady M. has proved herself capable of scattering the miniature class and although she is well under the weight it would not be surprising to see her do the same in light-weight class races. Mah Boy had three wins on end when she won both the open and middleweight classes at the meeting. This is a turn of good luck for the club’s president who, although he has nominated freely at all meetings, has been very unlucky. Honest Maid won the Extended Nursery Handicap after conceding sj. yards to her younger opponent, Gold Sway. This is only a start for Mr Gellatly’s bitch; she should win a lot more races. There is considerable confusion about the names of Mr L. Maitland’s team and it would be a great aid to handicappers and others if this matter were cleared up. It seems a pity that the Invercargill Club has decided to hold the Derby meeting on August 15, as the Dunedin Club’s Lloyd and Blue Pepper Cup meeting is also on that date. The club would be advised to apply for a later date.

There are two Dunedin whippets entered for the First Invercargill Derby —Red McGregor and Hazlewood—and two or three Southland owners have signified their intention of travelling to Dunedin for the Lloyd and Blue Pepper Cup events. If both meetings are held on August 15, there will be a general mix-up. Perhaps the association will not grant permits to both clubs. At the Invercargill Club’s last general meeting there was a very poor

I attendance. It is to be hoped that members will in future take more interest in the club’s meetings. If a member has any reason not to be satisfied with the programme of events drawn up by the club, he has probably only himself to blame through not attending the meetings. The officials of the club are doing more than their share of the work and it is up to the members to help them whenever possible. There is a possibility that for the Grand National Hurdle race at the next meeting a cup will be given by the same donor as the previous year. Mr D. Johnston has donated a trophy for the Grand National Steeplechase. The Winter Cup is held at present by Mr J. R- Aitken, who succeeded in this event last year with his good bitch Bonnette. This cup, which was presented to the club by the Hon. T. O’Byrne, is to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals before becoming the property of any contestant. If they are started in the Winter Cup race some of the most likely whippets are Bonette, Hot Tip, Mah Boy, Flying Shadow, Ben Pepper, Fullarton Donaldson, Young Ronnie, Lady G and Tom’s Kid. Suncup still holds pride of place in the list of local Derby entrants; his track work leaves nothing to be desired. Some of the Fleet Pepper—Tipperary Lass youngsters would be hard to beat if the Derby were a month later. These are the youngest of the field, Suncup and others being two to three months older. Minstrel Lad, the Winter candidate, has not been raced very often. He runs well and will take a lot of catching over the 150 yards course. Gladstone Girl was disappointing in her race last Saturday, but she is not to be overlooked. TABLE TENNIS COMPETITION MATCHES. The second series of games in the men’s table tennis competition were played last evening. WANDERERS v. COUNTY B. Wanderers defeated County B by five matches to three, the latter team doing well to win three games from its strong opponents. Many of the games went to three sets before any decision was reached. Fraser played well to defeat Smith after a long and closelyfought three-set struggle. The scores, with County B names mentioned first, were: Smiley v. Strang, 21-11, 16-21, 20-22; Groves v. Ferris, 21-16, 21-7; Noble v. Smith, 521, 12-21; Fraser v. Baird 21-13, 1421, 21-23; Smiley v. Ferris, 21-19, 2118; Groves v. Strang, 16-21, 20-22; Noble v. Baird, 16-21, 8-21; Fraser v. Smith, 21-19, 11-21, 21-17. COUNTY A v. BADMINTON A. Badminton A scored its second win when it defeated County A by five matches to three. Larsen proved just too good for McLean, but Gray was unable to cope with his accuracy and lost in straight sets. The scores, with County A names first, were: McLean v. Larsen, 21-12, 14- 16-21; Walker v. Gray, 17-21, 15- Croad v. McCallum, 21-9, 22-20; Brown v. Padget, 21-19, 11-21, 16-21; McLean v. Gray, 21-6, 21-10; Walker v. Larsen, 8-21, 18-21; Croad v. Giles v. C. Flaus, 26—23, 16—21, 8—21; I. Cameron v. J. Derbie, 18—21, 10—21; L. Boyer v. A. Millow, 21—19, 21—19; D. Cameron v. C. Flaus, 21—15, 19—21, 12—21; P. Giles v. M. There was a good attendance of members of the Regimental Miniature Rifle Club present, at the Drill Hall last evening when the A and B grade championships were fired. The scoring was good, the highest scores off the rifle being obtained by A. Pomeroy 80 and D. Bain 79. The following is a list of scores with handicaps:—
