NIGHTCAPS MEETING NOVICE AND OPEN STAKES In fine but windy weather the Nightcaps Coursing Club ran two stakes on their Plumpton on Saturday last. The usual arrangements were well carried out, all officials proving efficient. The results were:— NOVICE STAKE. First dog £3; second dog £l. First Round.—Mr B. Rushton’s bd a Royal Oak (Jauloux-Sabotage) beat Mr C. Kidd’s bl and wb Valencia (Ever Ready—Princess Comedy). Valencia led up by one length and in a good course, both dogs getting turn for turn, Royal Oak went the better. Points, 6J—4J. Mr J. Creegan’s f.b. Miss Dorado (Lupin—Dorado) beat Mr J. Rattray’s dk bd. b. Facility (Ever Ready—First Flight). Miss Dorado led up and in a short, straight course Facility got one turn for Miss Dorado to win. Points, 4— / Mr L. Kelly’s (V.S.) f.a. Achieved s Again (Again Terminus—Achieved’s Finer) beat Miss D. Rushton’s f.a. Peter Volo (White Chief—Suzime). Achieved’s Again led by two lengths, and did practically all the work in a busy run. The quarry deservedly got home after setting a merry course. Ponts, 11—4. Miss M. Tikey’s blu. b. Western Maid (Jaloux— Sabotage) beat Mr F. Gill’s blk. d. Philco (Paddy’s Pride—Minnie) Western Maid led by one length and turned. Getting another turn, Western Maid went well to win. Points, 3-11. Mr D. Murphy’s f.d. Ludo (LupinDorado) ran an accidental bye, Mr W. Young’s blk. b. Bobette (Great Slam— Nanna) not arriving. Second Round.- -Royal Oak beat Miss Dorado. Royal Oak led by two lengths and turned. The winner got one more turn from a good hare, which escaped. Points, 4—o. Achieved’s Again ran an accidental bye. Miss Western a bye. Semi-final. Royal Oak beat Western Maid. A short course in which Royal Oak led up by one length. Western Maid finalized but did not score full points. Points, 3—l. Achieved’s Again drew a bye. Final Novice. Royal Oak beat Achieved’s Again. A good straight course in which speed counted. Royal Oak got two turns to Achieved’s Again’s one. Points, 2 —l. OPEN STAKE. First dog, £4; second dog, £1 12/-. First Round.—Mr N. Marshall’s f.b. Oratriss (Turnup—Ora) beat Messrs Kidd and Evan’s w. and f.a. Invader (Lupin—Dorado). No lead in a fine run to hare. Good work by both dogs resulted in Oratriss finalizing. Points, 5— Mr W. Dahren’s blk. d. Discard (Winooka —unnamed) .beat Miss B. Duncan’s bd. d. Ardath (Jaloux—Sabotage). No lead, Ardath getting the first turn. In a good run the quarry escaped for Discard to win. Points, 51—4. Miss D. Rushton’s bd. d. Radiant Gold (Jaloux —Sabotage) ran an accidental bye. Mr N. Marshall’s f.a. Orator (Turnup—Ora) a bye. Second Round.—Oratriss beat Discard. Oratriss led up by two lengths and turned. The winner went great guns in a good course and outworked Discard. Points, 61—1. Orator beat Radiant Gold. Orator led up by two lengths to turn. Ora’s son went on to win rather easily with a good homing hare. Points, 6 —2. Final. At the request of the large public attendance, Mr Marshall ran off the final between his two finalists. Orator beat Oratriss. A short course in which Orator led up. Oratriss got half a point for a trip before Orator finalized. Points, 2—l. CRICKET INDIA v. LANCASHIRE. HOME SIDE’S BIG SCORE. Kent.— Sussex, first innings 187 (Freeman five for 71). Kent, first innings three for 261 (Ashdown not out 120). Kent won on the first innings. Derbyshire v. Worcestershire.— Derbyshire, first innings eight for 234 declared. Worcestershire, first innings 64 (Copson five for 38, A. Pope four for 12). Worcestershire followed on, making 47 (Copson seven for 16). Derbyshire won by an innings and 123 runs. Surrey v. Somerset.— Surrey, first innings 196 (Wellard five for 63). Somerset, first innings eight for 38 (Brown four for 8). The match was drawn. Hampshire v. Nottinghamshire.— Hampshire, first innings 107 (Voce four for 21); second innings, 61 (Voce six for 37). Nottinghamshire, first innings seven for 215 declared. Won by an innings and 47 runs. Oxford University v. Mr H. D. G. Leveson-Gower’s X I.—Oxford University first innings 359 (Mitchell-Innes 207); second innings, one for 22. Leveson-Gower’s XI., first innings 183 (Dyson six for 48). The Xl.’followed on, making 195. Oxford won by nine wickets.
