r t * “ ROLL OF HONOUR ; UNVEILED 1 j SKENE CUP PRESENTED i ’ The unveiling of a roll of honour to ’ pupils killed in the Great War took place at the South Hillend School yesterday. The ceremony was performed ; by Mr J. Hargest, M.P. Mr Percy Plunkett was in the chair. Mr Hargest said that the roll contained the names of almost every family of long standing in the district. It was a tribute to the loyalty of the 1 people in that community. He recalled the proud records of several individual soldiers, including Messrs Hazlett, who were veterans of the Great War. Another who would always be remembered was Sister Looney, of the New ■ Zealand Nursing Service. [ Presentation of Skene Cup. i Another pleasing ceremony was the presentation to the school of the . Skene Cup. The cup, which is awarded . to the school whose grounds show the i most improvement during the year, was presented by Mr W. Bell, a member of ■ the Southland Education Board, and Mr Hargest. The district was well represented at the function. Mr John Gordon was in the chair. Mr Bell congratulated the school on the tremendous improvement made in ’ the grounds during the past few years, i This spoke well for the interest taken in the school’s welfare by the pupils, . committee and householders. 1 Mr Hargest said that as the cup could be held for only a year he would have pleasure in presenting a replica , which could remain as a permanent token of what had been achieved by the school. Work of Women’s Division. Afternoon tea was provided by the members of the Women’s Division of ; the Farmers’ Union. In returning ' thanks for their hospitality, Mr Hargest ■ said that this was just another occasion upon which the women of the division took upon themselves the responsibility ■ of the district. No movement in recent yeats had grown so rapidly as the . Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union, and none was more instrumen- ' tai in increasing the amenities of country life. The division had undertaken ; a great task and was worthily fulfilling it.
