SOUTHLAND FORECAST. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, June 16. Following is the Dominion ‘Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland:— Variable winds, with south-west to west predominating, backing more to southerly and increasing after about 24 hours. Weather cold and changeable, with some scattered showers. Seas moderate, but later increasing. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather unsettled and squally, with further rain in most districts. Some heavy falls between the Cook Strait area and East Cape, but otherwise mainly showery. Temperatures cold, . with snow on the ranges. General Situation. —A rather deep depression has been crossing the Dominion to-day, its centre this afternoon being located south of Gisborne. An intense anti-cyclone still covers Australia and the western Tasman Sea, but a secondary depression is passing Tasmania. Winds.—Variable at first m the southern half of the South Island, otherwise south-easterly to southwesterly prevailing, moderate to strong generally and of gale force at places. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough to high north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, elsewhere rather rough to rough; eastern Tasman Sea, strong southerly winds and rough seas.

A hard frost yesterday morning was followed by warm sunshine at mid-day and in the early afternoon. The temperature was very cold last evening and gave every indication of further frost. At one o’clock this morning the weather was fine and calm. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows: — This morning (rising) 29.58 in. Yesterday 29.80 in. Monday 29.74 in.
