Mr J. W. Smith returned to Invercargill by the express last _ evening from a business visit to Christchurch. Cr. J. H. Tattersfield was nominated by the Invercargill City Council last night for the seat on the Bluff Harbour Board, rendered vacant by the death of Mr W. Hinchey. Messrs H. F. Sincock, D. C. McKay, T. O. Shacklock (all of Dunedin), C. Kilner (Christchurch) and H. C. Foster (Waimate) are among the recent arrivals at the Grand Hotel.
A motion of sympathy with Cr. H. Ritchie in his illness was passed by the City Council last evening. Best wishes for a speedy recovery were expressed by the Mayor (Mr John Miller) and councillors. The death of Mr W. M. Tarlton occurred at Dunedin last week. Mr Tarlton was born in London on January 30, 1853, and migrated to Southland in the Bosworth in 1857 with his father, who was for some years representative for Invercargill in the Provincial Council. Mr Tarlton served his law apprenticeship with Mr Macdonald, Invercargill, but later joined the Bank of New Zealand, being stationed in turn at Winton, Riverton and Palmerston. He retired from the bank in 1913 and after a short residence at Port Chalmers removed to Musselburgh Rise in 1919, where he resided up to the time of his death. In his younger days Mr Tarlton served in the volunteers and was a keen cricketer and fisherman. He was also a prominent bowler and was for 20 years a metober of the Dunedin Bowling Club. His wife died last year. He is survived by his son, Mr Maurice Tarlton, and his daughter, Mrs G. F. McKellar, both resident in Dunedin. Mr G. R. Herron, of Balfour, was appointed president at the annual meeting of the Dominion Group HerdTesting Federation.—Press Association.
