Fifty Years Ago To-day

(From The Southland Times).

JUNE 17, 1886.

The Queen’s Jubilee.—A public meeting convened by the Mayor was held in the Council Hall last evening to consider what steps should be taken to celebrate the Jubilee of her Majesty Queen Victoria. About twenty citizens were present. It was decided to observe June 21, the anniversary of the day on which her Majesty began her reign 50 years earlier, as a holiday, to ask the Volunteers to parade, the Fire Brigade to give a demonstration in the evening and to hold a conversazione in the Garrison Hall after the procession. Cattle Killed.—Our Colac Bay correspondent writes that the railroad has been very busy killing cattle in this part of the world, several of the settlers having had cattle run down by the train. Surely the Government might do something to fence in the railway.

Oratorio.—We are indebted to the Philharmonic Society for the first performance in Invercargill of Mendelssohn’s masterpiece in oratorio, “Elijah.” This performance was in sot? respects unique, as the chorus anu solo vocalists numbered but 30 voices, and the orchestra consisted of only half that number of performers. We venture to think that there are few places in the world where such a small body of amateurs have so creditably produced “Elijah.”
