Meeting Concludes W. R. DOWNIE’S SUCCESS The twenty-second annual meeting of the Waikaia Sheep Dog Trials Association was completed on Saturday after three very successful days, ine entries showed a substantial incpas on those of the previous year and the club was definitely justified in extending the meeting to three days, lhe trials were a good deal later in the season than usual, but competition was strengthened by the presence of several distant competitors who Y‘ S , Waikaia on their way to the South Island championship meeting, lhe total entries were 89 compared with 74 last ' An outstanding record was established by W. R. Downie, who was placed in all five of the classes held. He was first in the local event and maiden huntaway, second in the maiden head and third in the open huntaway and all comers’ head. Sheep guessing competitions resulted as follows:—First day (live weight 1541 b), G. Cruickshanks 1551 b, (dressed weight 871 b), N. McLeod 871 b. Second day (live weight 1271 b), J. S. Waddell 1271 b, (dressed weight 651 b), I. McKinnell 65Jlb, R. Mazee 6411 b, and C. A. Sutton 6411 b. The remaining detailed results were: LOCAL EVENT. He pulled steadily at the start and then a little fast, the man stepping the dog twice. He entered th. front of ring and showed only fair work there, completing in smin. Kep cast on the right and went out in a good line making a good head in llmin. He pulled in a good line to the flat, splitting the sheep before entering the front of ring where he iet the sheep out three times and completed in I minutes. Fairy was sent out on the right in good line, stopping and setting the sheep before making a good head in I.lmm. She pulled steadily, but let the sheep drift off the line and came across the flat off the line. She took the sheep a little past the ring where the work was very good, the run being completed in 7 minutes. Mac cast to the right in good line making a good head in 1-jmin. The dog pulled too fast but in good line to the ring where the work was fair, completing the course in 4Jmin. Boy cast to the right to make a non-stop run and head in IJmin. He pulled too fast and failed to stop under command. lie was a little off line on the flat and let the sheep out of the ring twice before completing in 5 minutes. MAIDEN HUNTAWAY. Help hunted in good line nearly to the first poles and was a little to the right through the first set, taking the sheep through the centre of the second set. He took a good line to the third set and completed the run in 4min. Skip split the sheep at the start, the dog running a little wide on the flat and then hunted well through the first set of poles. The dog took his attention off the sheep and let them off the line, but recovered to hunt through the second set and complete-' in s|min. Lou hunted through the first poles at the first attempt, but took the wrong slew and let the sheep off the line, she recovered to hunt through the second poles, but was still off the line. She let them drift through the third set and completed in 2J minutes. OPEN HUNTAWAY. Dog to huntaway and slew as directed by judge and. bark sitting or standing as directed. First £6 and cup donated by W. Bunting, to be won three times not necessarily in succession, second £4, third £2, fourth £l. Points: Huntaway 25, command 10, noise 15, slew 10, total 60. B. Mac Romp hunted through the first set of poles, the dog standing well up to the sheep, and then hunted well through the second and third poles slewing off the line after the third set and took the sheep across the face, held them up at the race and then hunted through the fourth set in 73min. Roy hunted through the first and second sets of poles in a good line and then let the sheep off the line and kept too far off. He hunted through the third poles and then took the wrong slew, and worked tco far off the sheep going across the face, then through the fourth poles in BJmin. Ben Romp hunted well through the first and second poles, then took the wrong slew and worked rashly when coming to the third poles. He let the sheep off the line and swung them about before going over the race to complete in 7J min. Help hunted through the first and second poles in a good line, but let the sheep off the line, taking the wrong slew before going through the third poles and slewed the sheep off the line by over-running the sheep.
