WEST OF ENGL AND SHIPPING
SERVICE TO BLUFF ACTION OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE At yesterday's meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce Mr C. B. Tapley said that complimentary references had been made by Wellington business men to the chamber’s action in seeking a better shipping service between the West Coast of England and Bluff. In answer to a question by Mr A. le H. Hoyles whether there was anything further to report about the service, Mr H. F. Drewe said there was not. The secretary read the following letter which had been ser.t to the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee:— “At the last meeting of the executive of this chamber, your letter of May 13 was read with a great deal of satisfaction. The decision to provide eight steamers for 1937, at intervals of six weeks, is expected to provide importers with a sufficiently frequent service to enable them to arrange that all their imports land at Bluff. You might be good enough to convey to the shipping lines the appreciation of this chamber. Regarding the sailings, West Coast to Bluff, we have not received intimation from’ you that four sailings will be allotted in 1937. We hope to have a favourable decision before long. “We can only await developments now,” said the chairman. There were present at the meeting Messrs J. H. Reed (president), C. B. Tapley, A. M. Macdonald, A. le H. Hoyles F. G. Nind, W. A. Ott, P. Linton Hodge, J. L. Mair, C. S. Stevens H. F. Drewe, T. J. Boyce, R. A. Douglas, R. M. Strang and W. Grieve.
