WEATHER REPORT

SOUTHLAND FORECAST. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, May 24. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland;— Moderate westerly winds backing to southerlies. Weather mainly fair but some showers likely on the southern coast. Cold temperatures. Seas moderate. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather cloudy to overcast in the northern and north-eastern portions of the North Island with scattered rains but some heavy falls in the extreme north. Elsewhere fair to fine. Temperatures cold with sharp inland frosts. General Situation.—Pressure has remained low to the north, while an intense anti-cyclone extends from eastern Australia across the Tasman Sea and New Zealand. Winds.—Variable at first in the southern half of the South Island, otherwise easterly to southerly prevailing. Moderate to strong over the North Island and of gale force at places in the far north. Light to moderate in the south. Seas.—New Zealand waters high on the east coast of the Auckland Peninsula. Rather rough to rough elsewhere north of Farewell Spit and Castlepoint. Slight to moderate south of Farewell Spit and Castlepoint. Eastern Tasman Sea—East to south-east winds. Strong in the northern portion with rough seas. •Moderate in the southern with moderate seas. The weather in Invercargill during the week-end was unsettled. A cold south-west wind blew on Saturday and heavy rain set in late in the evening. Yesterday the wind was northerly and was followed by rain at night. At one o’clock this morning the weather was cold, with a strong wind from the. north-west. The barometer readings for Friday, Saturday and Monday have been as follows: — This morning (steady) 29.97 in. Saturday 30.28 in. Friday 30.30 in.
