WHIPPET RACING

INVERCARGILL CLUB’S FIXTURE KEEN COMPETITION

Keen competition, good entries and a first-class track combined to bring success to the Invercargill Whippet Club’s meeting on Saturday afternoon. The principal flat, race was won by Mr H. Marsh’s Tom’s Kid, one of Southland’s most consistent performers. There were many thrilling finishes during the afternoon. The results are as follows:—

100 YARDS NURSERY HANDICAP. —First heat: J. Gellatly’s Honest Maid (Ijyds) 1, Mrs Brewer’s Willie Wyn (lyd) 2, J. Clark’s Shanghai Lee (4? 2 yds) 3. Won by half a length. Time, 8 1-5 sec. Second heat: W. Tinker’s War Eagle (lyd) 1, J. Clark’s Rastus Jones (4Jyds) 2, R. Souness’ Tea Party (10 yds) 3. Won by four lengths. Time, 8 l-ssec. Final: Willie Wyn 1, Honest Maid 2, War Eagle 3. Willie Wyn started brilliantly and hung on well to win by one length. Time, Bsec. 200 YARDS JUVENILE HANDICAP. —J. Bramwell’s Bramy’s Pride (HJyds) 1, J. Winder’s Lady H (15jyds) 2, D. Domigan’s Tahiti (11yds) 3. Lady M was the early leader from Toms Chance, with Tahiti and Bramy’s Pride also showing up. Twenty yards from the post Bramy’s Pride asserted himself and drew clear to win easily by two lengths, with Tahiti right up. Time. 13sec.

200 YARDS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP.—First heat: H. Marsh’s Tom’s Kid (11yds) 1, C. Unwin’s Young Ronnie (14yds) 2, J. Tatham’s Potentate (14yds) 3. Won by half a length. Time, 11 4-5 sec. Second heat: Staunton and Johnston’s Ben Pepper (14yds) 1, Mrs T. Brewer’s Havarita (13|yds) 2, Mrs W. G. Mills’ Trix Be Good (14yds) 3. Won easing up by a neck. Time,. 12sec. Final: Tom’s Kid 1, Havarita 2, Ben Pepper 3. Ben Pepner set a hot pace from Havarita, with Young Ronnie closing up. In a spirited finish Tom’s Kid showed a fine burst of speed to win nicely by a long neck. Time, 12 sec.

200 YARDS MIDDLEWEIGHT HANDICAP.—First heat: J. Tatham’s Madam Min (lljyds) 1, J. Gellatly’s Johnny’s Double (13Jyds) 2, J. Jamieson’s Dainty Dinah (131yds) 3. Won by two lengths. Time, 11 4-ssec. Second heat: H. Marsh’s Tom’s Kid (12yds) 1, Johnston and Staunton’s Yarraville (111yds) 2. Havarita beat the gun and was disqualified. Won by two lengths. Time, 11 4-ssec. Final.—Yarraville 1, Madam Min 2, Tom’s Kid 3. Tom’s Kid was early in the lead, but tired and Yarraville finished full of running to win easily. Tom’s Kid hung on into third place. Time, 12sec.

200 YARDS NOVICE HURDLE HANDICAP.—First heat: Mrs W. G. Mills’ Trix Be Good (20yds) 1, Johnston and Staunton’s Hot Tip (20yds) 2, W. Murphy’s Linton Lad (20yds) 3. Won by four lengths. Time, 13 4-ssec. Second heat: J. Burrowes’ Moretta (20yds) 1, R. M. Ferguson’s Sunshine (20yds) 2, L. Maitland’s Beadinwell (20yds) 3. Won by eight lengths. Time, 13 4-ssec. Final: Moretta 1, Sunshine 2. Hot Tip and Trix Be Good fell. Moretta won well. Time, 13 4-ssec.

200 YARDS OPEN HURDLES.—M. Winder’s Flying Shadow (18yds) 1, W. Murphy’s Warhaven (20yds) 2, J. Winder’s Lady G (lljyds) 3. Flying Shadow jumped brilliantly and outstayed Warhaven to win by one length. Time, 13 2-ssec.

200 YARDS OPEN STEEPLECHASE. —First heat: J. Burrow’s Loretta (8 yds) 1, J. Tatham’s Potentate (17yds) 2, L. Maitland’s Beadinwell (17yds) 3. Won by three lengths. Time, 15 2-ssec. Second heat: W. Murphy’s Warhaven (Byds) 1, J. Tatham’s Madam Min (8 yds) 2, C. Unwin’s Young Ronnie (8 yds) 3. Won by a head each way. Time, 15 4-ssec. Final: Warhaven 1, Madam Min 2, Potentate 3. Warhaven showed a return to his jumping form and out jumped the field to win with something to spare. Time, 15sec.
