SOUTHLAND FORECAST. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, May 21. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: —
Moderate to fresh southerly winds. Weather cool and changeable, with some scattered showers at first, but improving shortly. Some frosts inland. Seas moderate to rather rough. Following is the Dominion forecast: — Weather cool and changeable, with scattered showers. An improvement probable soon on the West Coast of the South Island, and a more general one setting in to-morrow, some frosts in the South Island. General Situation.—A slight depression has crossed the South Island to-day, and an intense anti-cyclone is advancing rapidly across the Tasman Sea. A cyclone centred west of Norfolk Island has lost its intensity. Winds.—Northerly over the North Island, southerly thence southwards, and southerlies extending shortly over most of the Dominion. Force moderate to strong. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rather rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits, and rising on the East Coast, otherwise moderate; eastern Tasman Sea, easterly winds at first in the northern half, otherwise southerlies prevailing, moderate to fresh generally, with moderate to rather rough seas. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine, but a cold south-westerly wind was blowing. Light rain fell early last evening. ... At one o’clock this morning the weather was fine and calm. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (falling) 30.30 in. Yesterday 29.86 in. Wednesday 30.03 in.
