Balfour

PERSONAL Mrs R. Brett and her son, of Mataura, are spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs A. P. Scobie. Miss Vera Slater, Oamaru, is the guest of Miss E. Roy, “Pahiwi,” Balfour. Miss A. M. Emmerson and Miss Dorothy Taylor, St. Kilda, Dunedin, are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Rasmussen, “The Oaks,” for the term holidays. Mrs P. W. McDonald, “Fairview,” has returned from an extended holiday in Dunedin.

Mr and Mrs A. L. Scobie, St. Kilda, Dunedin, are spending a holiday with friends in the district. BASKETBALL A friendly game of basketball between Balfour and Lumsden was played at Balfour and resulted in a win for Balfour by 26 to 6. A slight drizzle fell during the afternoon, but this did not prevent the game being finished. For Lumsden M. Crosbie, J. Scobie and A. Crosbie played well and F. Grant, R. Wilson, A. McMath, H. Dillon, K. Davis snd S. Dillon were prominent for Balfour. Messrs W. Cassels and M. Cain controlled the game.

On Monday evening about 70 friends and well-wishers of Messis F. G. and M. Perwick met to bid goodbye to them prior to their departure from the district. The evening took the form of a social and dance. Mr Boyle supplied the music. Mr D. McTaggert, on behalf of those present, asked the guests of the evening to accept a cheque as a small token of the esteem in which I they were held. Messrs W. Bulmore, H. Brown, W. Walker, C. Hailes, D. Casey, A. McLean, E. Black, D. Alexander, G. Lush, D. Lyons, J. Lamb and J. McCartney endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker and wished the Perwick families a happy and prosperous future in their new homes at Waimea and Ardlussa. In replying, Mr F. G. Perwick thanked all present for their kind remarks and also for the gift which he and his relatives deeply appreciated. Mr M. Perwick also spoke. Items were contributed by Miss E. Egan and Messrs J. and F. McCartney.
