Gore RUGBY FOOTBALL
Eastern Sub-Union
At the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Eastern Southland Rugby Football Sub-Union last night there were present: Messrs F. M. Murray (in the chair), R. S. Green, H. G. Wallis, T. Gray, A. H. Davidson, J. Cunningham, N. McLeod, F. Wallis jun., I. W. Martin and J. A. Edwards. The town clerk of Mataura (Mr F. K. Fisher) wrote stating that owing to the urgent need for improvements in the Domain ground, the council regretted that it could not see its way clear to meet the request of the sub-union for a reduction in the charge for rent. Mr Martin said that he noticed that when the matter was discussed by the Borough Council one member had stated that the “parent body,” presumably the Sub-Union, had reaped a harvest in past years and most of the money had been collected in Mataura. It was possible that the other councillors had accepted the statement as correct, which it was npt. The treasurer, Mr H. G. Wallis, said that during the last eight seasons the gate receipts at Gore had totalled £1405, compared with £246 at Mataura. He considered that such a misleading statement should be corrected. The secretary of the Northern District Sub-Union advised that the subunion had decided to play the Grant Cup match at Balfour on June 3. The date was accepted. It was decided to enter a team for the Country Day fixtures at Invercargill on June 23. The secretary of the Western District Sub-Union (Mr John Kirk) advised that Mr A. H. Lindsay had been nominated as its selector for the SubUnion’s team. It had been considered advisable to defer nominations for the team until after Country Day. Several members expressed the opinion that it would be preferable for sub-unions to nominate players beforeCountry Day, so that the selectors would know which players to watch. It was decided to inquire whether the Western Sub-Union was in favour of the suggestion that four selectors should be appointed and that form be reviewed on Country Day. J. Wallis was granted a transfer to the Wyndham Club from Queenstown. A transfer was also granted Leo C. Thyore from Star to Pioneer. Mr McLeod suggested that arrangements be made for Saturday play for third grade players. A team would be available at Mataura. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Cunningham, F. Wallis and J. M. Boyne, was instructed to endeavour to make arrangements.
