CLIPPED CALVES AT THE WINTER SHOW.
To the Editor.
Sir, —Our Winter Show is oyer again for another year, and the society is to be congratulated on the success it turned out to be. It shows what can be done when town and country unite m a common effort. There was one thing I took strong objection to, and I have been expecting to see a more influential pen than mine take up the matter. I refer to the clipping of calves m the Calf Club competition. Last year Mr Evans waxed eloquent on the matter, and assured all interested that in future no clipped calves would be eligible, yet this year we see the same practice followed in three cases, and though.they did not gain an award, they kept others out of the competition. If it was against the rules last year, why were the rules broken again? This is not the way to encourage the young farmers coming on. Speaking as one who has worked among cattle alLone s life, but never exhibited, I think that the attention of the S.P.C.A. should be drawn to the matter, as it is a most cruel thing to clip them bare on the most vital parts right at the beginning of winter. Trusting to see no more clipped calves at our Winter Show.— Yours, etc., SHORTHORN. Invercargill, May 20, 1936. When this letter was referred to the secretary of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs’ Association (Mr A. L. Adamson), he said that the rules were very definite that the clipping of calves was not permitted. It had not yet been reported to the committee that the rule had been infringed at this show.
