Gore RUGBY FOOTBALL
Yesterday’s Games
The Eastern Southland Rugby football competitions were continued yesterday in fine weather. At Gore Albion defeated Menzies Ferry by 12 points to nil. ALBION (12) v. MENZIES FERRY (0). The game between Albion and Menzies Ferry was not such as to arouse much enthusiasm on the part of the spectators, as play almost throughout was of a ragged nature, with little open play. Albion was aggressive during the greater part of the game, but was seldom able to conclude its attacks, as most passing rushes broke down in the early stages. Four tries were scored for Albion, none being converted. The teams were:—
Albion (red, yellow and black)— Muir; A. Martin, F. Crosbie, McDougall; Murdoch, K. Martin; Wyeth; Greer, Deans, Bacon, Simpson, Richards, Spittle, Collins, Smith. Menzies Ferry (red and black).— Baker; McCurdy, Andrews, Welsh; Sinclair, Rewcastle; Hansen; G. Pow, E. Wilson, Clark, J. Pow, Fleck, M. Wilson, Bulling, Laurie. There was no wind and the sun was hidden, so Menzies Ferry received little advantage from winning the toss. Crosbie kicked off and play opened raggedly. Albion invaded the visitors’ terrritory and Martin had an unsuccessful shot at goal. The Reds cleared temporarily, but the Colours came back again only to lose their advantage through fumbling. Play was poor for a considerable period, and was located in mid-field. Albion started a successful attack and K. Martin made an opening, from which Spittle scored. The try was not converted. A few minutes later Albion returned to the attack, Spittle making a good run from half-way ana scoring again after other players had handled. Crosbie was unable to convert. Albion 6, Menzies Ferry 0.
The kick-off at the resumption was fielded by Crosbie, who put in a long kick, which put Albion on attack. After a line-out Spittle secured and _ went over for a clever try. Crosbie’s kick hit the upright and bounced outside. Albion 9, Menzies Ferry 0. Albion maintained the offensive for a long spell, but poor handling and lack of initiative made the play uninteresting. A whirlwind attack by the Reds revived interest, and for a few minutes Albion was busy defending. A force-down relieved the position. A quick drop out by K. Martin put Albion on attack and the slow Menizes Ferry backs were caught shallow. McCurdy was beaten by the ball and Crosbie went through. He was collared on the line, but evaded the tackle and scored. Martin’s kick failed. Albion 12, Menzies Ferry 0. Mr F. S. O’Kane was the referee. PUKERAU (8) v. PIONEER (6). In a very keenly contested forward game at Pukerau, Pukerau defeated Pioneer by 8 points to 6. Pukerau fielded a heavier pack than Pioneer and its superiority was largely in this department. In the early stages play was open, but after the speedy Pioneer backs had once taken successful advantage of this play the ball was confined chiefly to the forwards. Crawford snapped up a dropped pass at halfway and broke away down the field to score in the corner. The kick failed. The Pukerau forwards retaliated, E. Valentine scoring in the corner after a good movement. D. Herron converted. Before the end of the spell Crawford and D. Herron each kicked penalty goals bringing the score to; Pukerau 8, Pioneer 6. There was no score in the second spell, but the game was evenly contested and full of interest, the Pukerau forwards dominating play. Mr L. O. Wallis was the referee. THIRD GRADE.
