BATTLESHIP OF 55,000 TONS
JAPANESE PLAN IDEA AT ODDS WITH ASSURANCES COST OF £11,000,000 (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) London, May 2. A well-informed London diarist of The Manchester Guardian says that naval circles are hotly discussing a report from Tokyo that Japan proposes to build a 55,000-ton battleship, with 21in guns. The diarist reveals that during the recent Naval Conference it was disclosed that the Admiralties of the chief Powers had planned for ships of up tc \ 57,000 tons. There is nothing technically impossible about Japan’s idea, which comes strangely after the assurance from Admiral Nagano, who is now the Navy Minister, that Japan’s main object was to have the size of ships reduced to even lower than Britain’s level. If Japan lays down such a monster, others will think that they must follow suit. Each ship of the type would cost £11,000,000, five times the cost of the Queen Elizabeth.
