WEATHER REPORT

SOUTHLAND FORECAST. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, April 23. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Moderate to strong southerly winds, reaching gale force at times in exposed positions. Weather cold and changeable, with passing showers, and in places hail. Seas rough, with a heavy south-westerly swell. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather- unsettled and squally, with rain at times in most districts, snow on the ranges of the South Island and hail in places. Temperatures becoming cold. Conditions beginning to improve, especially in western districts. General Situation.—The last of the intense westerly depressions of the recent extensive series has been crossing the Dominion to-day. An anti-cyclone covers Eastern Australia, and is advancing on to the Tasman Sea. Winds.—North-westerly to westerly from Canterbury northwards, southerly thence southwards, and southerlies extending over most of the Dominion by to-morrow evening, moderate to strong generally, and still of gale force in places. Seas. —New Zealand waters, rough to high on the West Coast and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, elsewhere rather rough to rough, but rising on the East Coast; eastern Tasman Sea, westerly at first in the northern portion, but winds soon becoming south-westerly or southerly, generally strong to gale force, with rough to high seas. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was dull and cold. A light drizzling rain fell during the evening. At one o’clock this morning light rain was falling and there was a cold wind from the east.
