CITY FOOTPATHS

PROGRESS OF REPAIR WORK

The work of breaking-up, regrading and regravelling the footpaths in Invercargill is well under way, but a good deal has yet to be done. The work was started on October 7 under the subsidized relief scheme and is planned to occupy three years at a total cost of £21,000. About 25 men have been in continuous emplcyment on a 40-hour week at the full current rate of 1/8.7 an hour. The principal work is the breaking-up, regrading and regravelling eight and a-half miles of full width footpaths (principally on the Flat). In addition there are 231 miles to be thoroughly patched to an extent not practicable for a number of years on account of a lack of funds. Fourteen and a-half miles of these have already been surface sprayed and should be in good order for a few years. The scheme embraces the whole of the footpaths in the town.
