POPULATION FIGURES

A DECREASE IN SOUTH INVERCARGILL. (United Press Association.) Wellington, April 1. The Government Statistician’s Office has issued the following census figures for 1936, those for 1926 being shown:—

A stupendous task confronts the Post Office officials in checking the Census forms after collection by the subenumerators. The collection and checking of the forms is slow work; the Invercargill staff has to account for 65 sections. The sub-enumerators are gradually completing their districts and as the forms come in to the Chief Post Office they are finally checked to see that all the necessary particulars are shown. One form wrongly filled in holds up a whole section, but generally speaking the householders have completed the schedules fairly accurately. In some cases, however, great difficulty is being experienced in obtaining the essential particulars. It will be some time yet before the final figures for Invercargill are available.
