AUSTRIA TO REARM

TREATY LIMITS COMPULSORY SERVICE INTRODUCED RESULT OF DANUBIAN CONVERSATIONS (United Press Assn.-Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 1.40 a.m.) Vienna, April 1. The Chancellor of Austria (Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg) has announced the introduction of compulsory military service, ■which will enable the rearmament of Austria to the utmost limits allowed by tire Treaty of St. Germain. The decision is the result of the recent conversations with Italy, when it was decided that after the reoccupation of the Rhineland Austria could no longer afford to neglect any measure to strengthen her slender defences and her independence.

Signor Mussolini has emphatically assured Austria of his continued determination to oppose any assault on the Austrian autonomy, presuming that Hungary would adopt a similar standpoint.
