FIRE IN TIMARU

BUSINESS PREMISES DAMAGED FLAMES SPREAD RAPIDLY (United Press Association.) Timaru, March 5. The biggest fire in the city area for some years occurred to-night, when the premises of Morrison’s Coal Company and Taylors, Ltd., plumbers’ merchants, were extensively damaged. In Morrison’s Coal Company’s premises there was £2OO worth of coal stacked in bags, and spontaneous combustion in these was stated to be the cause of the fire, which spread with amazing rapidity and had a strong hold before the brigade arrived. The contents of both buildings were either totally destroyed or considerably damaged. Two motor trucks were garaged at Morrison’s Coal Company’s place. One was valued at £3OO and the other at £2OO. The bodies of these were totally destroyed. Fortunately there was a wind from the north-east, otherwise the Grosevenor Hotel would undoubtedly have suffered. The brigade managed to gel. the fire under control in under an hour. ______
