REJECTED INVITATION

HEIDELBERG’S ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS. (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec 7.40 p.m.) London, March 4. References to Nazi ill-treatment of distinguished scholars were made by Sir Farquhar Buzzard, addressing the Oxford Convocation and referring to the rejection of Heidelberg’s invitation to its anniversary celebrations. Sir Farquhar declared that the endeavour to make the anniversary an occasion of universal rejoicing was psychologically ill-timed. All were anxious to strengthen the hands of those Germans who deplored, however silently, the prevailing political inquisition. The Berlin correspondent of the Morning Post says: “Himself party to the dismissal of 44 professors and lecturers for political reasons, the Nazi Rector of Heidelberg University sent a letter to the British universities withdrawing the invitation on the ground that a number of English personages confused politics with academic celebrations.”
