ATHLETIC SPORTS

ST. PAUL’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS The St. Paul’s Amateui’ Athletic Club paraded its strength at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon, when the club s annual track and field championships were staged, before a poor public attendance. It was no mean parade, for the St. Paul’s Club is very strong numerically and contains in its ranks some fine athletes. The standard of performances was high in all three championship grades—senior, junior arid under 15—evidence of this being supplied by the fact that no fewer than eight club records were broken during the afternoon. There were many fine races, but none surpassed in interest the 220 yards senior championship in which W. J. Atley, the title-holder, was defeated by G. Henderson. Atley has, for the past few seasons, been regarded as Southlands foremast sprinter and well maintained this reputation when, earlier in the afternoon, he won the 100 yards championship. In the furlong, however, Henderson was clearly the champion’s superior. Running with his usual strong leg drive, he passed the smooth-moving Atley at the entrance'to the straight and drew away to win by a clear three yards. Atley has recently been hampered in his training by a strained leg muscle, but this detracts little from the merit of Henderson’s win. The time, 23 4-ssec., is alone convincing proof of the worth of Henderson’s running. Henderson also won the 220 yards low hurdles championship and was runner-up for the 100 yards title. In the former event he gained an easy victory, the opposition being poor. He hurdled well, showing an improvement in leg recovery on his previous performances, but that crudity in action, which can only be eradicated by systematic and careful coaching was very apparent. Henderson broke the record for this event, but his time, 30 3-ssec, was not particularly fast. In the hundred he ran a good race, and, though too slow off the mark to make much impression on Atley, convincingly defeated the rest of tlxe field. Outstanding among the junior competitors was W. Miller. During the afternoon this runner won the quarter and half-mile junior titles—in so doing establishing new club figures for each distance —was runner-up in the junior 100 yards championship and, to cap all, carried off first place, from scratch, in a 220-yard handicap event. Small and wiry, Miller is possessed of an abundance of stamina and this, coupled with his speed, enables him to recover ground lost through tactical errors. His times on Saturday—ss 3-ssec. in the quarter and 2min. 10 2-ssec. in the half-mile—were very fair and, when he develops race-judgment, he should gain more than club titles. In the under 15 division, J. Elliotte showed very promising form. With a total of seven points, he won the Herbert Smith Trust Cup, R. Fogo (six points) being runner-up. The standard of performances in the field event section was only fair. J. Gow, H. Boyes, R. Jenkins and D. Chisholm were the best of a number of rather mediocre performers. J. Gardiner, who a few years ago was one of the province’s leading athletes, staged a “come-back” and was also to the fore in this section. When he gets properly into training he should make n good club representative.

Hard-working officials, with MrW.E. Maclndoe at their head, contributed by their efficiency to the success of the afternoon. Mr E. Dorman gave every satisfaction as Press Steward. Following are the results of the events on Saturday afternoon _ (other events were decided earlier in the week): SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. 100 YARDS. Title-holder, W. J. Atley (four starters). W. J. Atley 1 G. Henderson 2 A. Brandford 3 Atley was the fastest off the mark and gained a lead which he maintained throughout. He won by two yards. Henderson easily beat Brandford for second place. Distance, 33ft lin (record) (five competitors). G. H. Boyes 33ft 4in 1 A. Bridgman 30ft lin 2 J. Gardiner 28ft sin 3 Boyes showed an improvement on his form of last year to retain his title and

Time, 55 3-ssec—a record. 880 YARDS. Title-holder, W. Adam. 2min 17sec. (Two starters). W. Miller 1 W. Adam 2 Adam made the pace hot in the first lap and led till the final 220 yard mark was reached. (Three starters). C. Harvey 1 N. Dorman 2 A. Adamson 3 Harvey had a bloodless victory, leading all the way to win by a margin of 20 yards. There was little between second and third. Time, 31sec. BROAD JUMP. Title-holder, G. McBeatlx. Distance, 17ft 7in. (One competitor). R. SHOT PUTT (121 b Shot). Titleholder, A. Bridgman. Distance, 34ft 6in. (Three competitors). C. Harvey, 27ft lOin 1 W. Adam, 25ft 9in 2 A. Adamson, 24ft 7in 3 Harvey was the only competitor to show any pretensions to style and well deserved his win. HOP, STEP AND JUMP. Titleholder, R. Jenkins. Distance, 36ft Bin (record) (one competitor). R. Jenkins, 39ft 4in 1 Lean and loose-limbed, Jenkins does not look like an exponent of this event till he strikes the take-off board.
