ABYSSINIAN ATTACK REPULSED ITALIANS USE WIRE ENTANGLEMENTS DESSIE BOMBED FROM AIR (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Addis Ababa, February 10. A communique admits the first defeat to be acknowledged by either of the combatants when Ras Seyoum s effort to recapture Makale _ was repulsed after a day’s fighting. The Abyssinians flung themselves against terrible six-foot barbed wire entanglements and were mown down by ma-chine-guns. Seven Italian planes bombed Dessie for 65 minutes, dropping a large number of incendiary and high-explosive bombs. The intention apparently was to find the Emperor, who, it is reported, fired an anti-aircraft gun, refusing to take cover. A message from Rome states that Italy’s death-roll of European soldiers for January was 440, of whom 341 were killed in action. The European deathroll since the beginning of January last year is 884. On the lines of Italy’s “Wedding Ring Day” on December 18, the Abyssinians are bringing to the Palace shields inlaid with gold, valuable necklets and silver-worked harness towards the Emperor’s war chest to buy anti-air-craft guns.
