MILLIONS OF MESSAGES
TELEGRAMS AND TOLL CALLS. Over three million telegrams wera handled by the Post and Telegraph Department during the nine months of the current financial year ended December 31. This figure represents an increase of 9.68 per cent, over the business for the corresponding period of the previous year. The revenue total has not advanced proportionately owing to concessions in charges which were made during the period, notably that of the 6d minimum for telegrams, the advance under this heading having been 4.6 per cent., representing £7601. Telephone toll traffic is growing to impressive proportions, the number of calls handled during the nine months ended December 31 reaching a total of 8,195,788, an increase of 14.9 per cent.. representing an additional 1,063,699 calls. The increase in revenue, as in the case of telegrams, is not exactly in line with the extra business for the same reason. It amounted to 12.5 per cent., or £40,567.
