CALLIOPE DOCK

WORK OF EXTENSION ACCOMMODATION FOR NEW CRUISERS (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, February 11. The tender of Mr W. Williamson, contractor of Christchurch, of £2489 for the work of extending Calliope Dock, was accepted by the Auckland Harbour Board to-day. The work, it is stated, will be begun almost immediately. The extension to the dock is being made to accommodate the two large new cruisers Leander and Achilles which are shortly to replace the Dunedin and Diomede on the New Zealand naval station. The plans provide for the lengthening of the dock floor for an additional 13 feet, involving the excavation' of about 1800 cubic yards of sandstone and concrete. The work, which is to be completed within four months of the date of its commencement, is part of the major scheme for improving the naval defence of New Zealand.
