LIMEHILLS SPORTS

• MILNE WINS SPRINT DOUBLE A BIG PROGRAMME The Limehills sports were held yesterday in cool, fine weather. There was a good attendance, while the nominations were on a par with those for last year. The gate money totalled £65, a drop of £5 on last year. The programme was a long and comprehensive one, but it was run off promptly. The most successful open runner was C. Milne, of Invercargill, who won both the 135 yards and 75 yards handicaps. Running from a back mark, he showed that he is at the top of his form by winning the finals decisively in both races against strong competition. E. W. Fish (Dunedin) was again running well and won the 220 yards handicap after a fine run from six yards. He beat A. McPherson in the sprint, though conceding the latter four yards. It was an exciting, finish to a good race. The quarter-mile event was little less spectacular, Fish again demonstrating his ability over this distance but just failing to win. As at Edendale, he was defeated at the very finishing post when W. Forde threw himself ahead. H. Buchanan now has a solid record behind him as a Southland distance runner. He won the mile race yesterday from scratch, but had to concede too long starts in the half-mile event. A large number of school shield events for the W. M. Swale Shield, valued at £l5 15/-, were run off during the afternoon. The winning team was Winton A with 66 1-3 points, Limehills being second with 33 points. Winton B (8 1-3 points) and South Hillend (2 1-3 points) also competed for the shield. In all, about £lO 15/- in cash as well as handsome trophies goes to the individual competitors in this section, so that it was disappointing to see only three schools enter when all Southland schools are eligible to compete. There was a splendid finish to the final of the 15-inch underhand chop, with a dead-heat between J. Bone and A J. Hodges. There was almost as good a finish to the 18-inch doublehanded sawing, this event being won by C. and W. Donnelly. All three placed teams finished almost together. Three interesting amateur cycle races were also staged. Mr James Hargest, M.P., at the instigation of Mr H. Hammond (president), presented Miss V. Robb, of Hokonui, winner of the Southland 100 yards ladies* championship, with the trophy attached to the race. The patron (Dr P. Gow) presented the Swale Shield to the Winton school (holder). The dancing competitions made a pleasing branch of the gathering and the judge, Mr John Watt, remarked that a very high standard was maintained throughout, the highest percentage of his markings going as high as 92 and the lowest to only 75. Quite a number of the competitors danced as it they were performing a physical exercise, he said. As there- was no force in poetry, and as dancing was the poetry of motion, force had no place. The Browns Pipe Band under PipeMajor H. Gilmor, which paraded in full force, was a bright spot in the proceedings and added materially to the enjoyment of the gathering. Results were:— •
