PLUNKET SHIELD

AUCKLAND DECLARE WEIR SCORES 191 OTAGO’S BIG HURDLE (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, December 26. A fine all-round display of batting was given by Auckland in the second innings of the Plunket Shield cricket match against Otago at Eden Park today. Auckland made 303 in the first innings, to which Otago replied with 241. With seven wickets down for 376 in the second innings Auckland declared. Otago have lost one wicket for 37 runs in their second innings. The wicket was easy and the outfield fast when Weir and Postles resumed Auckland’s second innings, one wicket having been lost the previous day for 32 runs. The Otago bowling was steady, with Elmes and Dunning appearing most dangerous, but runs came fairly consistently. Weir was responsible for the fast rate of scoring (as Postles was painfully slow), not making a mistake until he passed the 100 mark, after which he was dropped twice off difficult chances. Weir gave a brilliant exhibition in compiling 191, including one six and 17 fours. He played flawless shots on both sides of the wicket, driving powerfully and revealing a very productive hook shot. Postles was sound, but the fact that he was 150 minutes securing 41 greatly spoiled his display. Another very attractive innings was played by Wallace (52), this colt scoring with fine shots, mostly through the covers. The professional coach, Townsend batted aggressively for 42, hitting five consecutive fours. Dunning, Elmes and Badcock shared the bowling honours, each securing two wickets. When Badcock and Saxton opened Otago’s second innings in a confident manner there appeared a bright prospect of wiping off part of the large deficit of 438 without loss. Thirtytwo runs were scored in even time, but Badcock was splendidly caught by Wallace with his total at 19. Saxton and Kerr played out time, the total being 37 for one wicket. Scores: AUCKLAND.
