RIVERTON BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. O\a t»rMß»ndent.) A special meeting—the last of the y ear — o f the Riverton Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Messrs Philp and Dickson applied for, and were granted, permission to erect a petrol bowser in Palmeiston street. . Mr A. Hamilton, M.P., wrote m reply to the council’s request for a Government grant for gravelling and improving Richard and ether streets m South Riverton. The estimated cost of the proposed work, the letter stated, was £l5O, and he regretted to report that his efforts to secure the money had been unsuccessful. It was resolved to write thanking the member for his efforts and to make a further request later on. Mrs E. Simpson made application for a renewal of lease of sections held by her.—Granted, under existing conditions. , . , , . Mr George Saunders forwarded his monthly report, dealing with the. work performed by him and his assistants during the month.—Adopted. Other Business. In reply to a councillor the clerk stated that Mr Woodley had paid a visit of inspection to the borough and he had advised the starting of repairs to the streets on 01 about January 6. Councillors Hogg and Dyke reported on a visit made to the northern part of Palmerston street. They advocated the removal of the heavy gravel at the corner on the road to the overhead railway bridge. It was agreed to adopt the suggestion and other members having pointed out the necessity of completing the bitumen work up to the town boundaries the Works Committee were instructed accordingly. Replying to Councillor Martin, who brought up the water supply question, Councillor Walker said the engineer he (Councillor Walker) had recommended had been away from the district but was expected to be home during the festive season. No doubt a report would be available for next meeting. Councillor Philp said he had received a complaint about the condition of the cemetery. The grass required cutting and a general clean up was necessary. The clerk stated that arrangements had been made to have the grass cut and removed before now but through an accident the man concerned could not carry out the contract. It was decided to refer the matter to the Cemetery Committee who were empowered to employ sufficient relief workers to have the job completed. The Mayor said that was the last meeting of the council for the year and his work during that time had been a pleasant one—made easy by the hearty assistance and co-operation of the councillors. He would, however, like to see the different committees meet more frequently than had been the custom in the past. By doing so he said, it would save considerable time at the council table. After referring to the future prospects, which he said, appeared encouraging, he concluded by wishing the councillors, staff and Press representatives the compliments of the season. Councillors Martin, Philp and Walker made suitable replies. At the conclusion of the business the councillors and Press were entertained at MacDougall’s tea rooms by the Mayor and a very pleasant time was spent.
