D.X. CLUB
SOUTHLAND BRANCH SPECIAL MEETING. There was an excellent attendance at a special meeting of the Southland branch of the New Zealand D.X. Club when Mr George F. Thompson, liaison officer to the Victorian section of the Wireless Institution of Australia, was present. In welcoming the visitor the president (Mr S. Robson) expressed gratification that Mr Thompson had found time to attend the meeting and hoped that his stay in Invercargill would prove enjoyable. In reply Mr Thompson said that although he was officially on holiday, he was very glad to be among the members and thanked them for their cordial welcome. A letter from the South Canterbury branch was received suggesting that a convention be held in Wellington at Easter and be attended by a delegate from each branch. A resolution was passed that in comparison with any advantages likely to be gained, the expense of sending a delegate from this branch would not be warranted. The best verification certificate for October was won by and presented to Mr W. Hollamby. Competition was so keen fcr the November entry that it had to be judged by vote and resulted: L. McCormick, with VK7PA, 1, J. Ure, with VK4GG, 2. In discussing arrangements for the 1936 VK3 competition, Mr Thompson stated that although this year’s competition had been a great success it had again been held under very adverse conditions. He proceeded to outline a scheme whereby it would be possible to ensure that the competition take place on a night when favourable reception conditions would prevail all over the Dominion. After hearing this scheme outlined members were unanimous in their approval. Mr L. C. McCormick provided an interesting talk on reports and how they benefit broadcasting which proved of assistance to members. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr Thompson was accorded an informal reception and several toasts were honoured. Opportunity was taken during the evening to present Mr Thompson with a silver cigarette case. In making the presentation, the president expressed the wish that it would serve to remind Mr Thompson of what he hoped would be a pleasant stay in Invercargill. Mr Thompson thanked the president and members for their efforts to make his visit an enjoyable one, which they had accomplished in a successful manner. He added that on leaving this city he would be carrying with him memories of what had proved to be a very enjoyable visit.
