Bluff Notes
(By “Annette.”) Mrs R. N. Porter left yesterday by the Marama on a visit to Wellington. Miss Queenie Stewart. Melbourne, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs T. Stewart, Burrows street. Mrs M. Ringland, Dunedin, is staying an extended visit to her sister, Mrs J. Stewart, Ocean Beach. Mrs J. Connelly, accompanied by her daughter, Jen, left on Friday by the Marama on a visit to Wellington. Miss Betty Pritchett, Christchurch, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs N. Haszard, has returned home. Miss Alexander, of the teaching staff of the Bluff School, left on Friday to spend the holidays with relatives at Gore. Mrs W. F. Cameron and family, Bann street, leave next Tuesday for Queenstown, where they will spend the Christmas holidays. Mrs R W. Williams, Te Wais, Bluff, visited Invercargill during the week to attend the break-up ceremony in connection with St. John’s School. A delightful children’s party was given by Mrs Norman Haszard on Wednesday afternoon last in honour of her small daughter Robin’s birthday. The children were motored up to the beautiful grounds of the Bluff Reservoir, where a treasure hunt was held, after which a picnic tea was enjoyed under the trees. Those present were: Elsie McDougall, Helen Cameron, Judith Fogarty, Pauline and Marie Metzger, Dorothy Mason, Tui Spencer, Grace Valentine, Gladys Chaw and Irene Williamson. A wedding of much interest to Stewart Island people took place at St. Matthews Church of England, Bluff, on Wednesday evening last, when Anne Gertrude Heaton, daughter of Mr Booth Heaton and the late Mrs Heaton, Halfmoon Bay, was married to Lewis Bragg, fourth son of Mr and Mrs R F. Bragg. Stewart Island. The Rev. C. N. Luker officiated. The organist was Mrs Stirland. Given away by Mr T. Heads, Bluff, the bride wore a long-sleeved, slim fitting gown of cream elephant crepe, with the skirt slightly trained. The wedding veil, which was worn capfashioned, was caught at the back with a spray of orange blossom and silver leaves. She carried a sheaf of arum lilies. The two bridesmaids, Pamela Bragg, sister of the bridegroom, and Eileen Anderson (Dunedin), wore pretty floral frocks of marocain patterned in blue and orange, with wide hats of blue stitched silk. Their bouquets were of marigolds and lycopodium. The bridegroom was attended by Mr George Bragg as best man and Mr C. Ramsay as groomsman. A small cousin of the bridegroom, Rima Bragg, acted as flower girl, and wore an ankle length frock of apricot silk encircled at the waist with silver ribbon. Her posy was of marigolds and maidenhair fern. A reception was afterwards held at the residence of the bridegroom’s brother, Mr O Bragg, Gore street. Mr and Mrs Lewis Bragg’s future home will be at Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island.
Mr and Mrs E. F. Nicoll, of Christchurch., will be the guests of their daughter, Airs W. E. Hazlett, Filleul street, for the Christmas holidays. Airs W. Fordyce, Ettrick street, who has been a member of the staff of Thompson and Beattie’s Ltd., leaves by the mid-day express on Monday to take up a position in Arthur Barnett’s showroom in Dunedin. Several presentations, from staff and pupils of the Southland Technical College have been made to Aliss Tui Rankin, Yarrow street, who has relinquished her position on the teaching staff.
