WYNDHAM NOTES
BAND OF HOPE. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a large attendance of boys and girls at the final meeting for 1935 of Wyndham Band of Hope, which was held on Monday evening, in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall. On the completion of the opening exercises, the children, under the able supervision of Rev. G. D. Falconer, and Misses I. Marshall, E. Cameron, and J. Laurie, set to with a will and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The supper which followed, however, was a fitting close to a thoroughly enjoyable evening, for which the children showed their appreciation by giving three cheers for the organizers. Bowls. On Monday evening, two pairs from the Gore Club—Wilson and Columb and Haigh and Taylor—successfully challenged Edendale—Blair and Irvine and McLean and Chaplin—for the Crawford Pairs’ Cup, Gore whining by 44 to 39. On Wednesday evening, the Edendale rink successfully defended the fifth challenge for the Murihiki Cup, defeating a rink from the Waihopai Club. The Edendale rink has been playing very consistently this season, Irvine at third being very strong, while Cushnie has a happy knack of getting his team out of trouble when required. It is very pleasing to see the success that Cushnie, a young skip has had this season. The next challenge is from Wyndham. On Thursday evening, Edendale met Mataura on the Mataura green in an inter-club fixture, Mataura winning a well-contested game. Irvine’s rink was the only Edendale one to register a win, being 7 up against Hutton’s. Chaplin’s rink was 11 down against Thorne’s and Hickey’s was 5 down against J. Buchanan’s. A start has been made with the Club Pair’s Championship, the following games having been played:—McLean and Hall beat Fisher and Hickey, Hoskin and Irvine, and lost to Frame and Muir; Fisher and Hickey beat Smith and Chaplin and lost to Hoskin and Irvine; Blair and Cushnie lost to Frame and Muir. Scottish Society. On Friday evening the Wyndham and District St. Andrew Scottish Society staged the annual children’s night in the Masonic Hall, when there was a record attendance present. The whole programme was under the management of the children, who contributed an excellent musical entertainment. At the commencement of proceedings, Ruby Frame, daughter of the chief, Joyce Young, and Ella McGillivary were played on the stage by the society’s pipers. Ruby Frame, who acted as chairman, expressed pleasure, in a neat speech, for the excellent attendance and trusted one and all would enjoy the children’s effort. The programme was as follows:— Christmas Carols, children; recitation, Violet Henderson; pianoforte solo, Greta Tangney; recitation, Ewan McEwan; duet, Betty Caldwell and Hazel Crosbie; recitation, Allan Stewart; accordion solo, James Niederer; duet, McGillivary girls; recitation, Winnie Henderson; song, Mary Cook; chorus, “Old Folks at Home”; recitation, Ruby Todd; song, Garth Niederer; pianoforte solo, Hazel Crosbie; song, Bob Malcolmson; dialogue, “Lost Bov,” Todd girls; duet, Joyce Young and Ruby Frame; song, Ewan McEwan; chorus, “Keel Row,” children. After supper had been partaken of news was received that Santa Claus had arrived, and he was played into the hall with great gusto. After addressing the children Santa Claus distributed to each child present a Christmas gift, much to the children’s i°yThe floor was then cleared and games and dancing were indulged in, music being supplied by Leckie’s Orchestra.
